FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

  1. What is an ETA?
    Ans: ETA is an Electronic Travel Authorization. It allows the bearer access into the issuing country (India). ETA is NOT eVisa. When the bearer of ETA is allowed entry into India by the Immigration Officer, it becomes eVisa. eVisa will be stamped on the Passport of the foreigner at the designated ICPs on production of valid ETA.

  2. What is the difference between “ETA Expiry date” and “Visa Expiry Date”?
    Ans: ETA expiry date is the last date allowing bearer access into India. Visa Expiry Date is the last date permitted for the stay of foreigner in India subjected to any stay stipulation applicable.

  3. What activities can I undertake on my Visa?
    Ans: You are required to strictly adhere to the purpose of visit declared while submitting the visa application. Kindly refer to terms and conditions of your Visa.

  5. What is the difference between “Visa validity/Visa expiry date” and “Stay stipulation”?
    Visa validity or Visa expiry date refers to the validity period during which the foreigner can stay in India on the strength of Visa subject to stay stipulations.
    Stay stipulations are the rules which determine the number of days a foreigner may be permitted to stay in India on the strength of Visa. Stay stipulations are of two kinds 1) Continuous stay in India from the date of last arrival. 2) Total Aggregate stay in India during the calendar year.

  6. What is the maximum stay allowed on Tourist Visa?
    Maximum stay by a foreigner in India on an e-Tourist Visa or paper Tourist Visa or both in one calendar year shall be restricted to 180 days.

  7. What is a calendar year?
    Ans: Calendar year refers to period from 1st January to 31st December of the current year.

  8. What is “total aggregate stay in a calendar year” and “continuous stay”?
    Ans: Total Aggregate stay refers to total period of stay of foreigner in India including multiple visits during the calendar year.

    Continuous stay refers to period of stay of foreigner in India since his last arrival.

  9. What is maximum duration of stay in Transit if I am not leaving the airport premises?
    Ans: Foreigner may be permitted to stay in the designated area of the Airport for the purpose of travelling via connecting flight from India for a period of 24 hours. Transit Visa should be obtained if the waiting period is longer.

  10. In case I reach the Arrival Immigration Counter few hours after the expiry of my ETA due to flight delays etc., will I be allowed entry into India on the ETA?
    Ans: It may be considered on case to case basis by the Immigration Authorities.

  11. In case I reach the Departure Immigration Counter few hours after the expiry of my Visa, will I be allowed to depart from India on that Visa?
    Ans: It may be considered on case to case basis by the Immigration Authorities.

  12. Can I undertake Tourism while on visit to India on Business/ Conference/ Medical Visa?
    Ans: Foreign nationals who are granted a particular type of visa with reference to the purpose of visit shall be required to strictly adhere to the purpose of visit declared while submitting the visa application. However, a foreign national (other than a Pakistani national) coming to India on any type of visa will be allowed to avail activities permitted under Tourist Visa.

  13. What is the procedure to obtain Political Clearance Letter issued by Ministry of External Affairs, as required for e-Conference Visa?
